County to raise misdemeanor fines

People convicted of misdemeanor offenses in Columbia County District Court may soon pay higher fines.

Justices of the peace went on record Monday supporting a raise in the current $5 fine to $20. It is expected that the Quorum Court will formally approve the increase at its May meeting.

The Quorum Court’s anticipated action will only cover convictions for crimes brought by county lawmen. But Sheriff Calvin Knighton said he will approach the cities of Waldo and Magnolia to pass similar ordinances to raise their fees as well.
