Diary 03-16-10

Mystery solved: Caller says she knows where those phone calls from the number, ‘000000000,’ are originating. “It’s an automatic dialing machine,” she explained. She inadvertently put the caller on hold, and when she switched back to the call, it was a recording from Congressman Mike Ross’ office. “They come from different people, but that’s who it was this time,” she said.

Diary thinks that explanation makes perfect sense, and as the election season gears up, those kinds of calls are bound to increase in volume.

Diary received several calls yesterday from local residents curious about the purpose of the “crime scene tape” at the SAU Greek Theater. Diary checked it out, and not to worry: there’s been no crime. The tape is merely part of the university’s Greek Relay for Life events.

Resident of Columbia Road 64 north of McNeil thinks it’s hard to obey the 40 mile per hour speed limit on her road because of all the potholes.

Caller noticed a bus for the Dallas Cowboys football team at the Magnolia Travel Center Monday night. She said the driver had taken a group of children from Carrollton, Tex. to Morrilton Bay and parked at the Travel Center for the night. Caller got pictures and a signed autograph.

Caller has a message for the driver of the silver Jeep Wrangler. “You might like your music, but I don’t, so please turn it down while driving in town,” he said. Caller adds that the driver in question was parked two cars ahead of caller at a red light and had his music so loud that it was vibrating caller’s windows.

The Waldo City Council will hold a special called meeting at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.

Your input is needed by the planning committee for the Magnolia High School 50+ Reunion, which has been set for May 14 at the Reynolds Center on the SAU campus. The committee is purging class lists, and is seeking information for the classes of 1940 -1941, 1943, 1944 -1947, and 1949. If you know of name changes, address changes, etc., call co-chairs Carolyn Wood at 234-1096, or Lois Awbrey at 234-5023. Invitations to the event will be mailed around April 1.

Parent of a Magnolia third grade student was glad to see East Side Elementary’s honor roll list in yesterday’s newspaper. “It means a lot to my daughter to be recognized for her hard work. Thank you,” she wrote.

The Columbia County Courthouse Restoration Committee will meet in the courthouse at 5 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

The Magnolia Arts Council is collecting photos and memories of past Sidewalk Art Shows. This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the art show, and the Arts Council is hoping to garner a special attention for the event. If you have old pictures, particularly of founder Marjorie Chamberlain, contact Diary at 234-5130, or via e-mail at editor@bannernews.net.
