Self-proclaimed 'sociopath' accused of murder in Waldo Post Office
At about 4 p.m., Thursday, Bill Blackmon, 30, of Waldo, posted to his Facebook page: “I may be a sociopath, but at least I’m finally on a path.”
And early this morning, authorities allege that Blackmon followed that path to the Waldo Post Office, where he murdered cleaning lady Betty Cooper, dragged her lifeless body out of the building, across the parking lot and to his residence, located across the street and to the rear of the post office building. From there, authorities say, he loaded the victim into her vehicle and drove that vehicle - with her body inside - to Magnolia to purchase gasoline and then down Dempsey Road to Columbia 69, where he set that vehicle on fire. Those authorities were alerted to the crime when postal employees arrived at their usual time and found the post office floor covered in blood. According to Columbia County Sheriff Mike Loe, those employees notified the police, and by 8 a.m. this morning, a massive manhunt was underway for Blackmon. Loe said Blackmon was captured at approximately 10 a.m. today and is now in police custody. Because the crime was committed in the post office - a federal building - the case is under the jurisdiction of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The United State Postal Service also has investigators on scene from Dallas, Texas, Loe said. None of those investigators were available for comment at press time. The crime scenes were worked this morning by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the Waldo Police Department, the Arkansas State Police and the FBI. Loe said a press release with further details on the crime may be released later today. The Banner-News is continuing to try to reach officials with the FBI and the USPS. No further information is available about Cooper at this time. |
