Berrish, Hamilton make appearances in horse theft case

Two defendants in the case of the November 2011 horse theft from Southern Arkansas University appeared before Judge Larry Chandler Thursday in Columbia County Circuit Court.

Hope officials concerned about early watermelon harvest

A mild winter has led to an early crop of Hope watermelons.

But with the early bounty, leaders in Hope are crossing their fingers there will be enough fruit for the city’s annual Watermelon Festival in August.

Hempstead County Agricultural Extension Agent Steven Sheets says he’s cautiously optimistic about this year’s watermelon season, even though hotter temperatures could cause an earlier-than-normal crop.

Watermelon stands have already popped up in the area.

Sheets says cooler weather and rainfall could help extend the melon season to later this summer.

The Watermelon Festival is scheduled for Aug. 9-11 in Hope. The annual event typically features tons of fresh watermelon — literally.

Entire state under “Extreme Wildfire Danger”

All of Arkansas’ 75 counties have been placed under an “Extreme Wildfire Danger” by the Arkansas Forestry Commission.

Logoly State Park to offer Hunter Education course

Logoly State Park is offering the Arkansas Hunter Education course July 21-22. It is state law for any person born after December 31, 1968, to have successfully completed an approved hunter education course before hunting in the state of Arkansas.

On Saturday, July 21, class will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The Sunday class begins at 1 p.m. and ends at 5 p.m. You must attend all scheduled classes and pass the final exam to complete the course.

The course includes classes in firearm safety, wildlife management, sportsmanship, bow hunting, muzzle loading, first aid, and more.

The course is recommended for individuals 11 years of age and up. It is offered free of charge but class size is limited so pre-registration is required. Contact Logoly State Park at (870) 695-3561 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday through Saturday to register or for more information.
Logoly State Park is located six miles north of Magnolia off U.S. 79 just past the Arkansas 98 junction in McNeil.

PurpleHull Pea Festival Quilt ready

The 2012 PurpleHull Pea Festival Quilt is ready and will soon be owned by some lucky individual.

The festival is conducting raffle for the quilt. Tickets are now on sale for $2 each, and are available from festival committee members. Tickets will also be available at the information booth during the festival.

The winner will be pulled from a hat and announced near the end of festival activities on Saturday, June 30. This is the eighth annual PurpleHull Pea Festival Quilt. This years’ quilt was made by Margie Holly.

The PurpleHull Pea Festival will be June 29 and 30, on and near the grounds of Emerson High School. Its feature event, the World Championship Rotary Tiller Race, will be 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 30.
