Fourth-year Southern Arkansas Mulerider Coach Bill Keopple has his charges reporting for fall practice Wednesday, August 8, as they begin preparation for the 2012 football season.
The team will go through physicals and attend meetings that Wednesday before concluding the week with its first three practices Thursday through Saturday, August 9-11, at 8:30 a.m. They begin the following week with a 2 p.m. practice on Sunday, and will hold solo sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:30 a.m., with two-a-days set for 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Following a 2 p.m. practice Sunday, August 19, the team closes the final week with dual sessions Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. and solo’s at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, before wrapping up on Saturday, August 25 with 7:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. practices.
SAU earns an extra week to prepare for its season-opener as its off weekend is slated for September 1, before they travel to Tyler, Texas, to begin the 2012 campaign September 8 against Texas College.
Southern Arkansas begins its second season in the Great American Conference with a 10-game schedule this fall that includes five home and eight league games. Following the non-conference meeting at Texas College, the Muleriders travel again September 15 for their conference-opener against Southeastern Oklahoma State in Durant, Okla., before returning home September 22 for Family Day activities in hosting Southwestern Oklahoma State in a conference tilt.
SAU is on the road September 29 in a league match-up at Arkansas-Monticello in what is billed as the first annual “Battle of the Timberlands”, and then makes a return appearance in the annual Boomtown Classic in El Dorado October 6, serving as the designated home team in facing Harding. They finish five consecutive conference games with a trip to Ada, Okla., October 13 to play East Central.
The Muleriders return home to celebrate homecoming and hall of fame October 20, hosting the newest member of the GAC in Southern Nazarene (Okla.). Although a new league member, the contest won’t count as a conference game this season.
SAU wraps up its final three games of the year with conference contests, hosting Henderson State October 27 and traveling to Ouachita Baptist November 3, before closing out the regular season in a home date with Arkansas Tech November 10.
