Rankin, Cotton and Cowart officially file for Ross’ seat in U.S. Congress

Three Republicans have filed to run for the south Arkansas seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Mike Ross, setting up a potentially costly GOP primary for the state’s only Democratic congressional district, the Associated Press reports.

Tom Cotton, John Cowart and Beth Anne Rankin filed papers Friday to run for the 4th district. The three are the only Republicans expected to seek the GOP nomination for Ross’ seat. Two Democrats have announced they’re seeking Ross’ seat, and state party officials expect a third to join the race.

Republican Congressmen Tim Griffin and Steve Womack earlier filed to run for re-election. Griffin also filed papers for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to appear on the May 22 Republican presidential primary ballot. Griffin chairs Romney’s Arkansas campaign.
