A union spokesman says workers in Texarkana have reached a tentative contract agreement with Cooper Tire Co. and have agreed to a brief extension to the negotiations, reports the AP. Spokesman David Beard tells the Texarkana Gazette that the extra time will allow the United Steel Workers Local 752L to discuss the preliminary agreement with its members. Details of the agreement weren’t immediately available.
The union announced the tentative deal shortly after midnight Friday, when the contract was set to expire. A spokeswoman for Cooper Tire didn’t immediately return a call early Friday morning. Since late November Cooper has locked out more than 1,000 union members at a factory in its hometown of Findlay, Ohio. The company acted after workers voted down a tentative three-year contract.
