An Oklahoma medic who was wounded after an improvised explosive device hit her convoy overseas has been awarded the Purple Heart, according to an AP report.
The Tulsa World reports Friday that Spc. Ashley Jones of Cleveland, Okla., received the military honor after her right leg was amputated below the knee. The newspaper says she was the first amputee in Oklahoma’s Army National Guard 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team after she was injured on Dec. 18. Jones was in good spirits in at hospital in Afghanistan.
