A segment of U.S. Highway 67 in Texarkana is now designated as Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway, according to an Associated Press report. Local leaders unveiled signs Thursday that give the nickname to the highway, where performers in the 1950s drove before Interstate 30 was built. Rock ‘n’ Roll pioneers including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison took U.S. 67 when on the Louisiana Hayride circuit, coming from Memphis, Tenn., and heading to Louisiana or Texas.
In Texarkana, the performers would play at the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium. The Texarkana Gazette reports the effort to name the highway segment took about two years to win approval.
We’re curious, too – what would you think about Magnolia designating a section of U.S. 82 or U.S. 79 as something special for our area? And if we did, what would be a good designation?
