Will you nominate Magnolia for an Arkansas Shine Award?

In light of the recent hard-working efforts of new Magnolia Mayor Parnell Vann to clean up Magnolia and restore our fair city to its natural beauty, we hope some of our readers will take it upon themselves to nominate Magnolia for the Arkansas Shine Awards! (It doesn’t cost a penny to enter, and we’re sure some of our wonderful citizens will step up to nominate our city for this honor, especially considering the overwhelming number of calls and e-mails we receive praising Vann for his efforts!) Here’s the information you need:

Entries are now being accepted for the fourth annual Arkansas Shine Awards, a program of the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission (KAB) to honor communities across the state that have adopted a comprehensive approach to keeping their hometowns clean and green. The entry deadline is Sept. 15.

New to this year’s awards program is the Arkansas Shine Superstar Award, which will be given to one community that has previously won two or more Arkansas Shine Awards, regardless of population size. This award will be judged separate from the other entries and requires entrants to answer an additional question on the awards application.

“Local communities are keeping our state clean and green with a variety of initiatives ranging from curbside recycling to litter pick-ups to beautification projects,” said Sarah Wruck, volunteer services coordinator for KAB. “We are eager to recognize such well-rounded efforts and share these projects with communities across Arkansas to continue motivating and educating people about the impact a clean community can have on tourists, business and industrial prospects.”

Entrants in the Arkansas Shine Awards must be an incorporated city in Arkansas and will be judged in six population divisions, with one winner in each. Each entry should summarize all activities in the areas of litter prevention, recycling, beautification and community development, including city government- and community organization-sponsored efforts. Entries must be postmarked no later than Sept. 15, 2011, and require the mayor’s signature.

Winners will be announced in October. Each winning city will receive a specially designed award at a hometown recognition ceremony sponsored by KAB. Winners will also be promoted statewide via the KAB Facebook page, in The e-Keepsake electronic newsletter and onKeepArkansasBeautiful.com.

“Great communities don’t just happen. They are planned, cultivated and maintained. Having a great community involves everyone working together to keep it clean, safe and vibrant. It’s the kind of community that invokes pride and attracts positive attention. It’s the kind of community where people want to live, work and visit,” wrote Robert Phelps, KAB director, in the Arkansas Shine Awards entry form.

The 2010 Arkansas Shine Awards winning communities were:
