County gears up for Fourth of July celebrations

Once again, Columbia County is the place to be on the Fourth of July! We hope you’ll add one or more of the local events to your list of plans for Independence Day, and be sure to invite your out-of-town friends and family to join you as our county honors our nation’s freedom! Read on for the full list of events (or at least those that have been announced thus far) . . . .

• Magnolia: The annual Farmers Bank & Trust Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will be held Sun., July 3, at Eastside Park. Entertainment will begin at about 7 p.m., as will the events in the children’s area (softball fields). Children’s activities will include (but are not limited to) pony rides sponsored by Heather Raney and the Columbia County 4H Horse Club; a dunking booth hosted by Immanuel Baptist Youth; and appearances by costume characters Dora the Explorer and Elmo, face painting, baggo, and a bounce house and slide, all sponsored by FB&T. Also available at the event: glow necklaces, balloons and drinks. Organizers also note that the pyro tech for this year’s fireworks show is the same one who designs Little Rock’s RiverFest’s fireworks, which are outstanding! Fireworks begin at dark (about 9:15 p.m.) If you or your organization would like to add to the list of events, call Neca Pharr at FB&T at 235-7005.

• McNeil Vision Committee will host its annual fireworks show in McNeil across the street from the McNeil City Hall. The fun begins at 6 p.m., Sat., July 2, and will continue until dark.

If you know of another Fourth of July event in Columbia County, let the Banner-News help promote it! Call us at 234-5130, or e-mail your information to!
