June 22 is the first day to begin circulating petitions for potential school board candidates, according to the Columbia County Clerk’s Office. School board elections will be Sept. 20 throughout the state. In Columbia County, two positions will be open. They are Zone 1 on the Magnolia School Board, currently held by Mike Waters, and Zone 5 on the Emerson-Taylor School Board, currently held by Linda Mullins. Each of these are five-year terms.
Waters announced his intention to seek re-election in today’s edition of the Banner-News. Mullins told us today that after holding her position for 19 years, she will not seek re-election. (The official announcement of her intent to not seek re-election will appear in tomorrow’s Banner-News.)
Anyone interested in running for school board positions may begin circulating petitions June 22. The first day to file a petition with the county clerk’s office is July 15, and the deadline to file is 12 noon on July 22. In order to get on the ballot, a person must have 20 signatures from residents in that school board zone. Petition forms may be picked up at the county clerk’s office.The deadline to apply to register to vote in school board elections will be Aug. 22.
