Bentonville student crushed to death by soccer goal

Bentonville police have identified a student who died when a soccer goal fell on him as 9-year-old Jonathan Nelson, reports the AP. Police say the fourth-grader was playing with other Elm Tree Elementary students when the goal fell over about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Nelson was taken to Northwest Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police Lt. Jon Simpson said officers will interview students after they’ve undergone grief counseling Thursday at the school. Bentonville Superintendent Gary Compton told the Northwest Arkansas Times on Wednesday that the goal fell on the boy. It’s not known how the goal tipped over or what part of the child’s body was hit. Compton said two school nurses treated Nelson at the school until paramedics arrived.
